A nice picture book

I really enjoyed looking at this book, it is nicely designed with plenty of rare photos and a nice 'quality' feel to it. It's also very reasonably priced. Sadly the text lets it down somewhat. Some of the technical explanations are rather brief and sometimes a bit baffling - and there are no technical illustrations to back these up. I feel the author relies rather too much on interviews with experts to get across technical concepts. Since the book claims to be all about interviews with FX practitioners rather than being a technical reference book, perhaps the author should have avoided trying to get the FX practitioners to explain their actual techniques in so few words. I feel this book works best where the FX practitioners are asked what they wanted to achieve in a shot, how well they think things worked or what excites them about what they do. If you want really clear explanations of how Fx work as well as all the history, you still cant beat Richard Rickitt's book 'Special Effects, The History and Technique,' Nevertheless, this book is a nice addition to the short selection available on the subject and I welcome it.

Everything you ever wanted to know about Special Effects...

Yes, it's finally happened. A skilled author has taken the time to contact the best FX artists in the world and compile the most comprehensive collection of stories, interviews and photographs ever published. Every major FX film gets a mention in this book, and there are 'behind the scenes' photos you will never have seen before which gives this book a real feeling of being a benchmark for literature on the subject. Whether you want to be a special effects artist or you're one already, I GUARANTEE you will not be disappointed by this high quality publication - congratulations Mr. Pinteau and thank you for compiling a book that will grace shelves for years to come.
