Pass it down!

I read this book three times and found that each time I picked it up, I couldn't put it back down.My 8yr.old son found it among my collection of books and began reading. Now, he can't put it down.It taught him to really be thankful for the life and opportunities that he has! And it also taught him to face challenges with courage. We applaud you Jennings, and both cried along with your memories.I HIGHLY recommend this book for young and old!

The best book I have ever read

This makes you laugh, cry, feel happy and sad for a little boy who seems to have nothing going for him! Very sad in places. Sometimes I wanted to pick him up and take him home with me even though it was only a book!

A Worthwhile read that shows the stuggle of a small boy

This book is the epic tale of the childhood of Jennings (the author). It is undeniably sad and at times tragic and will pull on the heartstings of any reader. I found the book patchy in places which made it a bit of a rollercoaster of a journey (much like Jennings's life). Read it, enjoy it but not what I would class as a true blockbuster.

I just wanted to hold Jennings, and make him feel loved!

Jennings' ability to make the reader see life through the eyes of an eight-year-old is what makes this novel so powerful. We see from his point of view the cruelties he endures at the hands of adults. For example: the nun who dragged him accross a wooden floor and caused him serious injury, or the foster mother who starved and abused him, or the teacher who humiliated him in front of other students. I just wanted to reach out to Jennings and protect him! The author shows such humanism through characters like Sal, Jerome, the kind nuns, and the policeman. The extent of their kindness made me cry! Their involvement in Jennings' life helped him to become the loving, responsible, productive man he is.

A inspiring book of a young child's harships.

This book was incredible. It also reminded me of how cruel people can be sometimes. Jennings remains free of bitterness throughout the whole ordeal which proves that he is a exceptional human being. He also stayed with his mother through her many illnesses and cheered up many of the lives that touched his. Overall, very sad and very emotional
