This is a very readable book, especially for any gay male who has a 'thing' about uniforms - some of the interviewees that author Steven Zeeland expertly opens up - his 'interrogation' style is discreet and virtually invisible - are indeed very interesting characters. Some, however, strike one as being merely sad - such as "Maynard" from San Francisco, who appears to be totally oblivious to the fact that some of the Marine pick-up stories he's narrating smack of pure sexual harrassment. It is shocking to read some of the exploits he allowed himself to be drawn into perpetrating. Yes, the book IS rather a turn on at times - especially real testimonies from real Marines - it's like meeting these people over a drink and hearing stories that would cure deafness! But the enduring image one is left with, after turning the final page is, unfortunately, of dysfunctional, predatory men for whom anonymous and often reluctant or even dangerous 'sex' is their mainstay - growing old whilst desparately trying to hold onto the memories (if not the libido) of their youths. A rather sad read, once the testosterone levels have subsided!
