Customer Reviews:
DROW CHAOS
War of the Spider Queen series has been a COMPLETE JOY from start to finish,Philip Athans is a superb author,EXCELLENT at revealing the cruel, devious nature of the drow! This book kept me riveted,a SUPERB addition to the series!Earlier reviewers sound the glass half empty types!Enjoy this book!It helped keep my love of fantasy VERY VERY HAPPY!
Agonizing
I finally put this book down. Yes, I managed to finish it, due more to the fact of my unwillingness to quit than any actual desire to see it to the end.

First books in series was good and I enjoyed every one. If this had been the first in the series, i would never have bothered with the subsequent ones.

Hate to say it, but new author Brian S. Pratt who wrote The Unsuspecting Mage does a better job at entertaining the readers. I couldn't put his book down. It's epic fantasy at it's best. Sure, it being his first book it's a little rough, but the story is sound and exciting. If you've been a fan of this series, you might wish to give it a try.

Annihilated
Having enjoyed all the first four books in this series I could not wait to continue the story in book five. I was very soon to be bitterly disappointed. The writing style completely fails to catch my interest or attention and I found myself having to read bits of the book over again. By a third of the way through I couldn't wait for it to end so I could move on to what I understand is a worthwhile conclusion to the series in book 6.Athans seems to be intent on re-inventing already well established characters which ruins the flow of the story and I struggled to care less what happened to any of them. If this was not towards the end of the series I would not have continued to read this volume or those following. Worst of the six by a mile
Read it to go on to book 6 ... grit your teeth
Having a series written by a number of authors is always risky but this series has been good throughout (some more so than others). The underlying story has a lot to do with this, which I suppose is down to R.A. Salvatore.

This specific book is very poor. Without giving too much of the plot away, there are a number of events where anyone who has read the preceeding four books would say "hang on ... no it wouldn't happen that way". It could be argued this is because the author is applying new edition D&D rules under the covers (he certainly hints at them often enough) but I don't think so. I'm fairly familiar with the rules and I still can't see how some of what happens, happens. This coupled with the fact there are some truly amazing things happening but they are handled in such a poor way you find it difficult to care.

If the first book in the series was this bad, I wouldn't have bought the rest. Although if you've read this far, it is probably worth reading to the end - I know I will.
