Excellent revision.

If you're thinking of getting into tabletop fantasy roleplaying games, then really, this is the game for you. There's a reason it's a classic that has lasted some 30-odd years, and this new revision will show you why.
I started playing D&D way back in 2nd edition, when the rules were weird enough to melt your brain, but this new version is absolutely as simple and easy-to-follow as rules can be. Even if you've got no one to teach you, grab your friends and the three core books (the Players Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Masters Guide), and get to playing. It's really that easy.
Guiding you through every step of character creation, from choosing a race and class, rolling up stats, outfitting your character with the right equipment and feats, plus advice on how to roleplay your character...the only thing not in this book is dice and group of friends to play with.
The feats and skills are excellently explained, as are spells and combat...actually, everything in this book is clearly explained, wonderfully set out so you can find everything easily, and the artwork is amazing. I can't actually find anything bad to say about the book at all.
Even for those of you still playing 3.0, the upgrade is completely worth it. Everything that was 'not quite right' about 3.0 is cleaned up and reworked, and you'll find that it all makes your games run significantly smoother than before.
A note for parents: there's been a lot of talk in the past about Dungeons & Dragons (and roleplaying games like it) being 'bad', that these games warp young minds and promote violence and other bad values. It's all rubbish. Roleplaying encourages imagination, socialisation, maths and reading skills, even moral and ethical consideration. You might even find that children want to go into more depth about their characters and their adventures outside of a normal gaming session; in that case, the game is also encouraging creative writing exercise in the form of character 'journals', or short stories that describe each gaming session in detail...or even other new adventures the character has been on/goes on in the future. If your children want to play, but you're not sure, pick up this book and find out for yourself what a healthy experience it can be.
All in all, if you're thinking of playing a classic tabletop RPG, or you're considering upgrading from 3.0, I highly recommend you go for your wallet and shell out the cash on SECOND HAND copies of these rulebooks. I'm only giving 4 stars because the RRP for something that is, essentially, a clean-up of the old rules, is a little high. Second hand, though, I'd say it's worth it.

The real core rule book!
|
If you are new to D&D then this is the very first book you should get, it covers the basics of the game as well as describing the core character classes and races, and provides details on hundreds of spells. Every player should have a copy of this book, along with a set of dice.
It is possible to run an entire gaming session with only the players handbook; but in order to get the most from the game the DM should also have copies of the Dungeon Masters Guide and the Monster Manual.

Another Update
|
This is the Dungeons and Dragons 3.5th Edition Players Handbook, the latest version of the game. It is also called the Core Rulebook I. This book tells you how to create and play your character. This is the only book required for the players. You will also need a special set of dice and paper/pencil, and in some campaigns, a figure to represent your character in the game. This book has everything you need to flesh out and equip your characters as well. A very nice table of contents. And is a well-made hardcover book, if you plan to run a campaign you will need as a minimum everything listed above plus, The Dungeon Master's Guide and the Monster Manual.
This update from the 3rd edition is more than just some clarifications, which are included. But there are also significant rule changes. And there are more options available to players. Even though this edition still has typographical errors, it is a better game.

Be warned
|
WOTC have dropped the character generation software that was included in the previous 3rd edition ..... a big draw back.
A lot of thought has gone into layout and re-balancing some of the rules .... they have done a good job.
Pitty about the software...
