Having read many fantasy series, I can only say that none surpasses Dragonlance for me. In the center of this amazing series, stands The Chronicals and The Legends. The Legends are an actionpacked, fastpaced adventure into the realm of Krynn and a journey into the hearts of the characters. Never have I experienced such an intriguing emotional plot in fantasy novels. The bonds between two brothers, the infatuation between a white priestess and a dark mage...unrequited love. Its all centered around archmage Raistlin Majere, one of the most mysterious and awesome characters ever! He chose a path of evil, but never fails to leave doubt about this. Is he truly evil? And can he love?
In the end, the peril and dangers have been overcome, so the good wins, but it makes you feel that the price have been too high.
In short: These books grab you by the collar, and smashes you againts the wall...You'll be laying panting in the chair asking for more.

A sad end to a great series

I've read these books now several times - and, for me, Raistlin is one of the best characters I have ever read in a book. He is a dark, powerful, intelligent character and wants to take over the world. In these books he does just that - however with the love of his brother does he ever succeed? Sadly this book puts to rest one of the greatest characters - although there are other books featuring Raistlin and cameo appearances this is still highly sad for me having grown up with the Dragonlance books. Every fan, in my opinion, should read these books as they are one of the rare sets of books that take you from where you are deep into another world.

For sheer ideas and story, these books are fantastic. I love them to bits, even though the standard of writing is pretty shoddy.

I totally agree with all of the other reviews. These books are ace and are well worth reading. If only Peter Jackson would make a movie out of these or the Dragon Lance Chronicles. All the movies based loosely on them have been pants.

The rest of the story...

The only true sequel to the 'Chronicles' set of books, here in gift-pack form. Legends works as well as the first story, but focuses its scope more intently on Raistlin, Caramon and Tas. In some ways this works, in others it frustrates, before finally we get a 'mini-reprise' of Chronicles in the final volume. As to the story - Well, Caramon and Tika are running the inn, and Caramon's got fat and alcoholic because Raistlin's left to become the most powerful mage ever. Raistlin decides he wants to become a God, so travels back in time to get the means to do just that. Caramon becomes the reluctant hero trying to stop him. Notable points are Tas being forced to grow up more than even in the Chronicles books; Caramon also being forced to grow up (something that was sadly absent from Chronicles, but this really does make up for that); and Dalamar, a great almost-dark character who really doesn't feature enough for such a good idea. But generally speaking, the series reprises all of the good points of Chronicles, with only some minor flabby points during the time travel, which you really don't notice given the pace of events. Ties up a lot of the loose ends left after Chronicles, as well.
