Customer Reviews:
The best
Perhaps the best book I have ever read. I laughed, cried and thoroughly enjoyed it. The characters are brilliant and the descriptive language makes you feel that you are there with them. Drizzt is so cool! :-)
can i do more than 5?!
Astounding. A wonderfly gripping read. I am by no means new to fantasy, in fact its my passion, but this series came as a shocker! Slightly grim and delishiously malicious, its encaptivating. The story is slightly confusing at the beggining, as you are plunged in with no time to get used to your new surroundings. Thats just about the only fault i can find. The main character is wrapped up in the story from the very beging. Narrowly avoiding being sacrificed at birth, Drizzit finds himself the only being in his underground world with a conscious. As he slowly climbs to the top in weaponry most keep their opinions to themself. . . but his oddity has by no means gone un-noticed. After reading all his books i still agree this and the next trilogy are the best. after it dwindles and losses the plot a bit, but dont let it stop you from reading these!! you will not regret it.
Shocking
I'd never read any Forgotten Realms books before, so was eagerly anticipating my first foray after reading the reviews of this trilogy. I went and bought the trilogy, rather than a single book, as the reviews were so positive, that they surely must be masterful books, and I couldn't go wrong with them.

How wrong could I be? These books are just awful. Are they actually aimed at adults? Maybe if they are aimed at young adolescents, then they could be excused, but I can't see any reference to that market segment, so I'm assuming that they are actually aimed at adults.

The idea for the story is interesting, but that's as much praise as I can share. The character and setting should provide a fresh angle for fantasy novels, but the writing is just truly awful. The use of language is basic, the dialogue is ridiculous, and the adherence to Dungeons and Dragons rules for magic and canon is farcical. ALl the levitating and casting globes of darkness is cringeworthy. The dark elves going to the 'gym' to train? Come on!? Were the books based around a game of Dungeons and Dragons that the author played with his friends?

I won't be going near another Forgotten Realms book, especially as this author is held up as the 'main man' and shining light of these series. I can only assume that there's a loyal and captive audience for these books, maybe showing extreme brand loyalty. There's no other reason anyone should touch this stuff.

Steer well clear. This is fantasy for children.
If you want real fantasy try Michael Scott Rohan's 'Winter of the World' trilogy.
Got Me Addicted!!
I've never been one of those book reading types but when I stumbled upon the dark elf trilogy and the legend of Drizzt series I instantly fell in love. From the beginning of the book to the end I was engrossed. A touching story of a young dark elf growing up in the hate filled world of the evil Drow. Drizzt with compassion has to betray his race and even his family to follow his heart, full of action, adventure, pain and happiness Drizzt's life is full of excitement. You can not help but feel for Drizzt, feeling saddened even angry when he is and smiling when something well deserved and good happens to him. From the beginning you know there is something amazing about this character. I highly recommend this book to everyone not just people who are into fantasy books but to everyone else as well. To everyone who is into fantasy book's this is a must read. I've brought the icewind dale trilogy and I will read Drizzt's story all the way through. I can now honestly say because of R.A Salvatore's creation's and brilliant style of writing that I am a full blown book worm!!
Surprisingly good!
I am an experienced Dungeons and Dragons player (since more that 20 years) but usually I avoid to read fiction inspired by this game system, considering that most of what I tried was very poor and frankly it was a waste of time. This trilogy however is different - in fact it can be considered as a really good fantasy book, describing in its two first installments a very advanced (but also very decadent) civilization.
In fact, I found those books by a backdoor - playing "Baldur's Gate" on computer I was stunned, when I met Drizzt do Urden, a dark elf who actually was a noble and well intentioned wandering knight. Only then I did learn that there was a cycle of books about him and I allowed my self time to try the first of them. And I was hooked! The underground civilization of dark elves (or drows) was not entirely new to me (I fought against them many times in Dungeons and Dragons adventures - and I frequently had to run away screaming...) but reading an actual novel about them was an unanticipated pleasure. The main hero is very likeable, the rest of his family are great villains and the Underdark world is fascinating. I liked all the three books (the first two are better than the conclusion) and I think that anybody who likes fantasy or SF books will like them too. So, do not let yourself initimidate by the fact that this is an offspring of D&D game system. Give this trilogy a chance and you will not regret it.
