This book is a pre-Second World War book written for Indian Army officers (i.e. mostly young British men) who were to serve with regiments in the NWFP of India (now NWFP of Pakistan). Despite the title, therefore, the Pashto here is more useful to travellers in Pakistan than to those in Afghanistan. The book is almost 75 years old, and just as the weaponry described in the book is now obselete, so too is much of the language. However, a Pashtun friend of mine at university did find the language far more recognizable than that of my far more usable and up-to-date Afghan Pashto book (downloaded from the US Government's CAL site) despite the age, so if you can't find anything better for Pakistani Pashto, this book will serve. I found the section on verbs quite hard going, though I must admit I wasn't following the book closely, sticking more with CAL's _Beginning Pashto_. It's not really designed as a teach-yourself course.
