I did love this book, but everything in it echoes Kelley Armstrong's 'Bitten'.
Angsty female werewolf/cat, rejoins her pack, old flame returns, trouble with a stray/newborn, leaves her boyfriend behind...even the description of the Werecat's change was practically the same, which disappointed me.
I did enjoy it, and if you liked Bitten, it's well worth a go.
She obviously has a great talent for writing, but I'd like to see something more original in future.

Iv read over some of the reviews on here, and one mentions that Faythe is brought back home to take care of the missing Tabby situation herself. (tabbies are female werecats and there are only 8, so they are precious) Wrong: she is brought back because her father wants her surrounded by her pride who can protect her, and it is very much against her will! She doesn't come home in ablaze of glory expecting to save the day single-handedly, as implied by another reviewer - far from it in fact...
Yes, she is a heroine who can kick ass if so required, but unlike some characters in these type of books, shes isn't a man in a womans body ie always looking for a fight. She only fights when she has to, and I have to say the fights scenes are very refreshing because unlike the character of the 'bitten' and 'stolen' series, she does actually get hurt! She takes the punches as she gives them, and doesn't always win; the fights are equal and more realistic for it I feel (as much as werecat fights can be). And when she gets into another fight, she even comments on her old injuries, which havnt magically healed in record time as other characters' injuries are wont to do in other series like this one.
Yes, Faythe isn't perfect, and can sometimes be a bit whiney, or selfish, but then who isn't sometimes?? I like her all the more for it. She's fiesty when she needs to be (against baddies), and in arguments with her family, she is often put in her place, and acknowledges that she doesn't know everything - most of the time. I felt this made her all the more likeable and identifiable.
You will soon be hooked on this book, and although the sequal isn't quite of the the same standard (i would give it 4 stars rather than the 5 for this one) it is still a must-read.
If you buy this book expecting it to be completely original, then of course you're going to be disappointed. It's a fantasy book with a rebellious heroine who can shapeshift. So yes there is going to be some predictable plotlines. However, I felt that the author did put an original angle on quite a few things, and in the predictable 'heroine gets in trouble' bit of the plot, I could actually feel the terror of the threat against her, unlike the character in 'bitten' where you always know rescue is just around the corner before any real damage is done.
All in all, I highly recommend this book to any self-respecting fantasy lover. Don't be fooled by the semi-dressed girl on the front cover, the plot isn't frivolous and the heroine certainly isn't an airhead!

Not one for feminists

This is well written and plotted, were-cats are a great new idea, but and it is a big but for me, they inhabit a world where the females are forced to inhabit a 1950's style pre-liberation world which I found irritating. I could probably have coped, except for the inconsistencies in the character of the heroine, Faythe. Faythe is a rebel, but it's a shallow adolescent rebellion type of rebellion, not one based on any kind of logical thought at all and while she wallows in her rebelliousness,it's only ankle deep. I can't quite reconcile that with Faythe's wanting to do post graduate studies-on the evidence of her behaviour and reluctance to think things through and apply a little basic logic, I doubt her ability to get an undergraduate degree.
Faythe she accepts the basic tenets of her world, and doesn't question them at all except to rebel against her autocratic father's diktats - anything he says is automatically wrong, this is amusing in that he approves of the unsuitable boyfriend, and Faythe runs away from him too, until he turns up as the white knight at the end. While the world is well built in many respects and the story rattles along, it irritated me. I will undoubtedly read the second volume, just to find out what happens next, but probably not until I can get a second hand copy!

After reading a dedications page that thanked someone for "triple-checking my Spanish and not laughing at the mistakes I made", it's incredibly sad that my first impression of Stray was "or, indeed, correcting them." I say sadly because it was an enjoyable read, despite the fact that, as other readers have noticed, the heroine is not as likeable as she might be (read: you'd like to not see her as a selfish, immature tease, but somehow...). It's easy to get sucked into the sexy and intriguing world of the Pride and the book is even thought-provoking, if you can't get out of your lit-student mentality like Faythe. I would be inclined to read subsequent books in this series, but I don't see it becoming a favourite.

I was hooked form start to finish, a great book, grisly when it needs to be, love interest, strong female characters,fun and fiesty. A good read. My only complaint is there isnt a sequel yet!
