CBT (Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy) finally acknowledges that therapy is about relationship and emotion! If one looks carefully at CBT (Craftily Borrowed Theories) as a political movement it soon becomes apparent that it involves the misappropriation of every other therapy's ideas, techniques and methods. Theorists then run some random control trials (RCT's) before declaring 'a new approach' for treating mental distress that is 'evidence-based'.
Whilst the strength of such books lies in the simplicity of the writing, CBT (Can't Believe it's True) books often lack a soul of their own. I've concluded that this is simply because, in its efforts to steal everyone else's ideas and ally itself to medicine in a quasi-medical association, CBT-ists end up serving up steak as cheeseburger to an increasingly evidence-hungry, fast-food, quick-fix culture.
To Safran's credit, he does acknowledge that the emotional and therapeutic skills required to address process and relational issues in psychotherapy do demand extensive training beyond the usual CBT (Cut n' Burn Training)course. This explains why the market is presently flooded with CBT (Carefully Basted Turkey) DIY books when, from any other psychotherapy, being in relationship with a psychotherapist (who is attuned to more than your adherence to his/her model) is actually why psychotherapists of any worth are required to train for years prior to working as therapists.
