The best volume you'll ever own
|
This is undoubtedly the best volume of the entire Holmes canon that you're ever likely to own. I own a great many copies of the various stories including some "complete" volumes but this is undoubtedly the best. The quality of the book is clear. It is a sturdy size with lovely gilt edged pages. The layout is excellent and clear even if the quality of some of the images is less than ideal.
In short buy it as you cannot do better.

"The Complete Sherlock Holmes" is a splendid big volume containing the whole Canon, with a good selection of the Strand Magazine illustrations and a foreword by David Stuart Davies. It's a lovely production: full-cloth binding, all gilt edges, head and tail bands, ribbon marker, and section-sewn. My only adverse criticisms are that no artists but Sidney Paget are credited, though at least six illustrated the stories after his death in 1908 (and one of Josef Friedrich's pictures has replaced Paget's in "A Scandal in Bohemia"), and that some illustrations are a mite grey and fuzzy. Over all, this is a beautiful book, a pleasure to handle and a pleasure to read.
