Enjoyable middle segment of trilogy
|
I thought this was an incredible story. This graphic novel is in the middle of the story (after Death, before Return of Superman). There isn't much action or fighting, instead we have an engrossing story of loss. Lois Lane must deal with the loss of Superman, and at the same time cover for the fact that her fiance Clark Kent has disappeared during the rampage of the mysterious Doomsday monster. Clark's adoptive parents have to deal with their loss too, and the world must say goodbye to their hero. For a superhero comic, it is well written and emotive. The arwork varies a lot, but it never becomes atrocious. Superman comics always have on going story lines and plots that last years, so if you never read any of the comics from this time (1992-1993)you will get a bit lost as to how Lois knows Clark=Superman, why Lex Luthor has a son who acts just like him, where this shapeshifting Supergirl came from etc etc. I would suggest you buy a few of the related graphic novels, in particular Krisis of Krimson Kryptonite and "They Saved Luthor's Brain" and Panic in the Sky to fill in some details. All in all an excellent, quiet segment in the death/return trilogy that saved the superman comics from being cancelled (DC Comics wanted to cancel the comic because sales were so bad, then when they tried to kill Superman, sales went up again so they brought him back to life!)

Rambling yet engrossing

This is the middle book in the trilogy that started with The Death of Superman and ended with The Return of Superman. Superman is dead, and this book looks at how his friends, his family, and the wider citizens of Metropolis react to it. While the storyline isn't as strong as Death of Superman or Return of Superman (it rambles from subplot to subplot without any real unifying point), it's still a fascinating read if you've already read either the Death of Superman or the Return of Superman. Art-wise it's the usual mish-mash you get with stories taken from the Superman comics; some chapters are pretty good, others are pretty awful. One particularly bad panel has Lex Luthor looking like some kind of elf... still, that doesn't distract too much from your enjoyment.
