More than meets the eye here...

Firstly, this book is not a stocking-filler for the lads: This goes way beyond the usual light-weight tabloid fodder (which sadly appears to have gone right over the head of one of the other recent reviewers). This book offers an insight into Paul's struggle to cope with his past traumas, the fall-out from which have often threatened to destroy him. There are countless thousands of people who will be able to relate to the therapeutic details contained within the covers which arguably classes this as a self-help book. The fact that Paul has achieved this much attests to his strength and determination to bounce back again and again. If you're looking for a few snappy anecdotes and a bit of boot room gossip buy the tabloids. If you're after a truthful account of the strategies he and countless other sufferers employ to cope with the world buy this book: One thing is for sure - there are very few among us who, if honest, will not take something of great value from this book.

Reading "Being Gazza" - Literally a Journey to Hell and Back
|
|
My god, what a load of old drivel. There's not much you can actually write to review this book as it is so dull. He writes about him not having had a laugh for about 3 years and my goodnes isn't he right. This book should have been written by him, and only for him. It's purely to help himself and that's where it should have been left, purely as help for him, not to bore the rest of us with the promise of an exciting read, only to bore us to absolute tears with the complete rot he's spouting. If you haven't already bought this, don't.

A Truly Strong Man
|
I bought this book for my son, and queued on crutches to get it signed by the man himself. I used to think the same as a lot of people about Gazza; that he was wasting a god-given talent by letting his demons take hold. Then I read 'Being Gazza'. This book tells the tale of Paul's horrendous journey through therapy and his courageous battle to overcome the many side effects of his addictive personality.
Several times I laughed out loud at Paul's various antics. Other times, I must admit, I had a lump in my throat at the pain he has endured for so long and his desperation and determination to beat his addictions. Several times he has been beaten by them, but he has not given up yet. After reading this book, I believe he is well on the way to complete recovery and still has a lot more to offer the footballing world.
It is co-written by his therapist, Johnny Mac, with much analysis from him of each episode of Gazza's life since the release of his autobiography, Gazza: My Story, in 2004. It is clear from his contributions that he has been a tower of strength to Paul and that they have a very strong friendship, which is so important to him.
This is the most honest and open account of anyone's life I have ever read and I wanted to return to the shop and give him a big hug for being so honest and brave...but of course, he'd long gone.
Where once I wouldn't have given this man the time of day, I now would give him whatever he needs to keep that strength going. Well done, Paul!
