Editorial Reviews:
Sandi Toksvig reads Jacqueline Wilson's Glubbslyme in this unabridged two-cassette audio book.

Glubbslyme, by the award-winning author of many bestselling titles (including Double Act and The Suitcase Kid), is a light-hearted story of friendship and magic that is guaranteed to delight all imaginative 7-11 year olds.

Rebecca's been rejected by her girlfriends, so when a 300-year-old magical toad offers to become her best friend things take a turn for the better. Instead of lipstick and little ponies Sarah becomes absorbed by learning to fly and casting spells on her horrid neighbour and beastly girlfriend. It all sounds great fun but having magical powers brings serious responsibilities when Glubbslyme encourages her to be as bad as her 17th century namesake, the wicked witch Rebecca Cockgoldde.

Wilson's skilful portrayal of the growing friendship between the bad-tempered, pedantic and vain toad and the imaginative, lonely young girl is funny, wise and reassuring. Running time is two hours and 45 minutes. --Tamsin Palmer

Customer Reviews:
glubbslyme - not so great
I read this book at school. I am 11 and me and my friends all thought that this book is definately not something that we would reccomend to someone our age. It would probably seem quite enjoyable to a 5 to 7 year old, but the actual words may be a bit hard for that age. I think it was poorly thought out because the people that the storyline would appeal to would probably be unable to read the book, but those who could manage would find the plot babyish.

However, this book did have occasional comical moments. These were few and far between but one or two of them did get a laugh from my class.
More Witchcraft for the Potter Generation
In some ways I really like this book but as an adult and a parent concerned about the prevalence of witchcraft in children's literature I wouldn't recommend it. It's too long. It misses a good opportunity to discuss the real history of witch trials and that those who were accused of being witches were very often NOT.
The toad in the book is a 'familiar'. Why not just call it a demon in slimy clothing? Various spells are cast. Hex's are put on Rebecca's enemies. The toad is particularly amoral but at least Rebecca tries to educate him in the niceties of proper behaviour.
My concern is simply this: that young girls will resort to witchcraft to solve their relationship problems, and as we all know young ladies have frequent bust-ups with their friends. The good thing at the end of the story is that Rebecca braves it to go and be nice to her 'enemy'. But she achieved this without the help of Glubbslyme. Glubbslyme gets her into trouble a few times and she doesn't really enjoy it. She gets her own back by forcing him to make them both fly.
For me, I felt the use of sweets to make a 'nice' voodoo doll, the use of everyday ingredients to make potions and the chanting of magical words made me feel uneasy. I would hate to think that children's interest in witchcraft would be sparked by such a book.
toadstastic book
This is a mind boggling book.It gets really interesting in the middle.Rebecca finds a toad called 'Glubbslyme' and he can talk and do magic.I could not put the book down till i had finished it.It is such a magical book.I would recommend it to people who like a bit of magic in books and cliffhangers in the end.It can be read by people aged beetween 8-12.
Fun and laughter with a frog that talks!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glubbslyme is a great book, full of laughter and entertainment. It is about a frog who can talk, and when Rebecca makes a wish it comes true, but not in the way she wants it to!!!! My favourite part of the book is when Rebecca puts the umbrella up when it starts to rain, and she goes floating up into the air, with the frog!!! I really recommend this book, it is one of the best Jacqueline Wilson books!!
