Better than "The Last Templar"
|
When I took this book out at the local library, I remembered my disappointment with Khoury's last book, "The Last Templar", which had a very bad politically correct ending. But I took a chance at this book anyway, and it payed off!
The action in the book grabs hold of you. The theme is exiting, and really challenges your beliefs and your mind. and the ending is better than for most of these books.
The negatives is that the plot is to easy to figure out. You don't have to be nuclear physician to figure out who the characters really are and what they really want. That means that you know how the book is going to go, when you've read about 100 pages. But the subject of the hunt keeps you reading.
It's 4 small stars, but I thought 3 was too little.

EXCELLENT, GRIPPING AND A PAGE-TURNER

I bought this book in W H Smith as something to pass a train journey! The book starts in Iraq with the finding of a mysterious chamber, and then suddenly we're in a cell in Portugal. Then we're back in the middle east,in Beirut. This is a brilliant book that shows great research and gives details of various places, together with dovetailing the past and present. The characters are very well-written and one feels that they are actually "living" beings. One of the best books I've read in a long time. Raymond Khoury is definitely a "find".

all one needs in a thriller - just bloody fantastic
|
I have to admit that I just came by this book as I was despeartedly searching for something exciting without really knowning what I am looking. Maybe you know this feeling. In the novel section with the semi-religious thrillers I saw Raymond Khouray's second book and first thought that this is another one a la Da Vince Code. But I bought it nevertheless and - to my own surprise - I was hooked with page 1.
It is fast running thriller, based in the present with some historical background. The characters are very different and develop with this plot. They are no sterotypes and do not talk or act like robots. Is involvement in the BBC hit thriller "Waking the Dead" clearly shows here. Not that this a copy of that show but the charracters are much rounder and interesting than in the usual thrillers. That the story is mainly set in the Middle East, Beirout and here is background is an asset as he can describe country, city and atmosphere with much knowledge and passion. I like his style of writing a lot. And before I forget: the plot is just fantastic.I could not put this book down. I think the author can become very quickly one of my great favorites.
