A wonderful interesting account, made more poignant for our family as our very own grandfather was the skipper Cliff French, mentioned in the book. It brought a tear or two to our eyes to see grandad French's own handwriting reproduced in the book of his ships' log. His daughter (still alive today) was also a then little girl who remembers playing on the same decks many years before Nick did the same and so we can relate to the way of life, a highly moving and recommended book, a must read for all Thames barge enthusiasts.
