Heap on the literary prizes

Heap on the literary prizes for this articulate first novel. Blending mystery with emotive events and real characters (in the sense that you believe in them, not that they existed), this is one of the great modern reads. What a story! And how well-written.

Wonderful, well written

What a great book - the effortless way this very convoluted tale is written is truly excellent.
It's intriguing, sad, inspiring - I could go on........
World War 2 and the terrible savagery invoked by the Third Reich against the Jews is so deftly dealt with, actually not in long detailed description but in well chosen phraseology.
There is, somehow, in this book a sense of the divine being played out in the background and, really, I suppose, that this is the author's intention all along.
All in all, a great read which I very much enjoyed

not that good !

I've only ever given up on 2 books and this was one i've given it 2 stars because there is a good story in this book its just the author can't get it out of it. He try's to impress with big words and makes the simplest of sentences string out i gave up after 90 pages it was like walking through glue

An unforgettable read...I could not put it down!

I don't know how anyone could criticize this book or say it's hard to read. I found this book utterly consuming and finished it in three days reading whenever I found time. The plot is so intriguing and keeps you surprised right up to the end. I didn't want this book to end and cried at the ending with Agnes and Robert. I wish more books were written with this much intelligence, historical fact and emotion.
I would recommend this to anyone who has interest in WWII history.

Enjoyable but complex read

I found this to be a very engrossing read mostly; however, towards the end, the plot became quite complicated and required huge concentration on my part! This might be because I was very tired when I was reading it but I don't think so. That said, it is still worthwhile to read and enjoyable.
