Thoroughly enjoyable ...

In contrast to some other reviewers I found this book to be a really good read. I was wary that the book might just be a write-up of a TV series story, but it turned out to be so much more.
I'm a big fan of the travel genre, but found this book to be so pleasing that I have now ordered his latest book (Moon Daisy - which definitely moves me out of my rut) and am looking forward to reading that and enjoying his writing style again.

Definitely No Going Back....

A great disappointment, especially after the previous good reviews (could this really be the same book?)
If I had to define this work in a few words, they would be "..then I did this, then I did that, then I did something else..." I found the writing tedious and irresistibly reminiscent of my schoolboy essays on "What I Did In The Holidays".
I did struggle through to the end of this book and it really WAS a struggle. There are no insights, no real information on Catalan life and nothing to interest me in Mr kirby's experiences in Catalunya.

Realism to the foreign dream
|
|
I read this whilst on holiday, and what struck me most was the amount of optimism the family had as to how things where going to progress once in Catalonia. I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it to anyone like myself interested in living the foreign dream if only I had enough guts to do it.

Incredible

Trust me, I've been there! Martin describes his family's heroic move to Spain so personally that it brings the reader right to the Spanish countryside. Good wine, hard work, and a few small maricles make this family's new home one of a kind. I enjoyed this book to the very last drop. No doubt you will too!

Homage to Catalonia

I read it in almost one sitting. It's a marvellous story, well told, of a family's dream to live a better life away from the treadmill. The writer cleverly avoids the usual pit-falls (such as describing 'amusing' locals), and has a nice relaxed & likeable style. That lovely part of Spain is brought alive on the page - I think it would make a great Christmas present.
