Fast spaced, steamy, and action packed paranormal mystery
|
I'm quite new to the paranormal, urban fantasy universe, Full Moon Rising by Keri Arthur was the 2nd book I read in the genre.
I very much enjoyed reading this book, it was like watching a very fast paced and steamy action movie.
I think Keri Arthur is brilliant in succeeding in creating that gloomy, suspenseful athmosphere that was lurking all through the novel. Great scene setting. I'm in awe seeing the universe she created with all the details worked out. And all the steamy sex scenes! wow.. though it was quite a change for me to see that here the sex wan't something that the hero and heroine shared because of their deep feelings for each other, no, here the sex is just a need, another sort of hunger, or in the case of werewolves, even some kind of sickness, that comes around the full moon, and that they can't control.
The hero and the heroine are interesting characters, they are 3D, complex and very believable: Quinn, the sexy and so irresistible vampire hero is everything you could ask for in a hero, and Riley the independent and very kick-ass heroine though she is feisty and very Buffy, she still remains feminine and vulnerable. A very endearing and human mix, though human she is not.
And something that I've found quite refreshing and surprising: that it seemed to me that in this novel, the romance storyline had to take a step back to let the stage to the plot. Because it is not some very stupid and simply solved mystery here, oh no, it is so complex and full of twists and turns, that you have to really read it attentively or else you will lose your way. The mystery is so compound, that you won't even see it resolved at the end of this first book, there will be a lot of loose ends that will make you want to grab the 2nd and 3rd,etc. volumes of the series and just read on to discover what is really happening behind the scenes...

Good start to series

I liked this enough to buy the next 4 books in the series. I like the universe, the plot and the cast of characters. What really let it down for me was the sex - there was a lot of it and it was boring. I can live with a werewolf having sex with a lot of different people if I have to, but not boring sex scenes! It felt mechanical rather than emotional which works intellectually in this "sex is just another hunger" universe, but it just doesn't work for me as a reader. It's not a good sign when sex scenes don't hold your attention. Maybe that will get better. It took Laurell Hamilton a long time to graduate from writing good foreplay to good sex scenes.

A fantastic book and great series.

I first discovered this in the book isle of my local Asda. It isn't the kind of book I would normally read but I was hard pressed for choice and decided to give it a try. Boy was I suprised!
Keri Arthur is a very talented writer. The world she has created is so realistic you can almost feel the atmosphere she describes. She goes into the book as if you already know all about her world, and even though I didn't have a clue, I forgot that I didn't the minute I started reading.
The characters in this book are the best I have seen in a long while and I am in the process of reading my way through the rest of the series. Keri Arthur has got me hooked on this genre. and I fully intend to see this series to the end.
A very well written and entertaining series which I couldn't put down. I would recommend this for people who have read this genre before but I would also say that this series is a great entry point at which to begin.

A howlingly good read
|
I'm not a real fan of what I call "white" Australian writing though some authors do have merit but not many (could change my mind here!), but I have to confess I have really enjoyed Keri Arthur's series of books with Riley Jensen as the reluctant Vampire/Warewolf Hybrid who finds herself in a whole heap of trouble when her twin brother goes missing (he's a Guardian and works for an organisation that helps keep the peace between humans and other world creatures) and bodies start piling up, an amnesiac hunky Vampire appears at her apartment, and she is reluctantly dragged into the murky world of the Guardians in order to find her brother and work out why someone is trying to kill her new Vampire friend.
Riley is a likable protagonist with surprising human failings (despite being a non-human) such as compassion and kindness, hence the reason she refuses to become a Guardian and would rather work for them as an Administrator but her boss Jack knows she is perfectly capable of being as ruthless as her brother, something she has been avoiding since coming to the big city to live.
All in all a good fun and easy read which I can highly recommend.
