a disappointment from a great author
|
This is my fourth SEP book, and I have been considering myself a fan of hers. Unfortunately this one is a disappointment. What I can not understand is the glowing customer reviews for Heaven, Texas. The relationship between Gracie and Bobby Tom (what a bad name) is rather superficial and the nature of the main characters are slightly more than ridiculous. Bobby Tom and his life style is definetly kitsch! Although SEP had tried hard to make the readers believe his talents and intelligence, the result is somehow disappointment. On the other hand, personally, I liked to read the dialogs between Way Sawyer(the rich and the bad guy of the town) and Suzy (Bobby Tom's mother), their sizzling relationship was much more interesting. Hence, I must say that their part might have been a little bit extended. I highly recommend you to read Dream a little dream and Nobody's baby but mine from same author, you will not be disappointed if you prefer light, humorous, real love-romance.

SEP's best

Susan Elizabeth Phillips writes great, light hearted romances. This one is the second in a series on the Chicago Stars, although it works perfectly well as a stand alone. It is about golden boy Bobby Tom Denton and how he comes to terms with retirement from football due to a knee injury. Bobby Tom is one of the most charismatic characters I have ever come across and even though I knew from about page 5 that he was everything I detest in a man: a completely self centred male chauvinist, one can't help falling in love with him. The heroine, Grace Snow has been sent by movie producers to bring the two week lateBobby Tom on set. How she manages that is absolutely hilarious. SEP books always feature very strong female characters and this book is no exception, Gracie is also on a journey of self discovery, and the way these two very unlikely people end up together is wholly unique but also very believable. All in all thoroughly recommended.

101 romance - writing by numbers
|

This is my second SEP book after "Kiss an Angel" and I must say I enjoyed this book more. I still found the situations contrived and unbelievable, but unlike 'Angel', this book has a more modern feel to it and was occationally quite funny. It is not a wonderful book, but there's no denying SEP's talent for writing. I found it a bit stale a touch too 101 romance, how to write a 'typical' romance novel, for my liking. The sex scenes tried too hard to be steamy and ended up just being long and somewhat unsexy (all except the 'icecream' scene that had distinct possiblities). I was uncomfortable with some of the 'dominator/dominatrice' themes and some of the situations left a unpleasant taste in this regard.... That said Ms Phillips certainly has her 'fan club' but if you want to read how 'City slick goes back to small hometown to make a sexy B-movie..' should REALLY be done, read "Welcome to Temptation" by Jennifer Cruise.

Wonderful!

"Heaven Texas" is the second installment in the "Chicago" series, with "It Had To Be You" being the first. Both stories were romantic and funny and impossible to put down.

The best book I've ever read!!!

Susan Elizabeth Phillips is one of the best writers of romance today!! I've read a lot of romance novels, but this book is my all time favorite. (I've read it 5 times) Bobby Tom and Gracie are an unforgettable couple. I laughed and cried along with them. The plot and characters are well-developed and the book never drags. I had a hard time putting it down! The ending is GREAT!!!!! I highly recommend this book! Go out and get it now!!! : )
