This is my all-time favourite book! I have read and reread it and never become tired of it. I love everything about it; especially the fact that it forces one to look at what appears to be a disasterous situation - the birth of a baby with Down's Syndrome into a family of almost fanatical intellectuals - with a completely new perspective. It validates the cliche that "everything happens for the best"...even though it might take some of us a very long time to realise how we have benefited from some of the more traumatic experiences in our own lives. The miracle of this book is that the author has taken a subject which one imagines is going to spawn a very grim read and, instead, has managed to create an incredibly moving, warm and - yes! - very funny book. A great triumph!

I received this book as a proof, early in my first pregnancy, when I was working for Waterstones at Lancaster University, England. I was happy enough to learn that my babe should be born with no apparent problems, and lucky enough for that to be the case. In this book, however, is a story of a true journey of understanding. All mothers encounter this when first expecting, the questions of self-worth and the enevitable re-assessment of one's own childhood. But to experience such a pure and incredible pregnancy is quite amazing. As is wanting to share it - the possibilities of being branded a lunatic - well, there's one every couple of pages - but the funny thing is THIS BOOK WORKS. Adam made so much possible, despite his "disabilities" that this should be compusive reading for any pregnant couple. The world will never look the same again, the colours will brighten and never fully dim. God bless the Beck family.

Expecting Adam - a mind-changing experience

My wife and I read this amazing book this summer while on holiday and have been talking about it to one another - and to our friends and family ever since. Martha Beck is to be congratulated for writing a mold-changing book. Exploring through her own experiences some really important issues - our approach to those who are different, pro-choice and pro-life, the limits to rationality and academic approaches, lessons fropm upbringing, the variety and mystery of spiritual experience, she could so easily have written a polemical book. Instead, by honestly sharing her experience, hurts, joys, pains, confusions and insights, she has produced something very rare. This book is a genuine sharing of a deep, difficult and ultimately life-changing time in her life. I encourage you to read it and learn from it. My heartfelt thanks to Martha, her family, the amazing Adam, the publishers and all who co-operated to get this gem into print.
