I bought this book on a whim in the airport for my 9 year old stepdaughter before we set off for Spain. What value! It came everywhere with us and by the end of the week she knew exactly which heading to go to for certain phrases or vocab, and was happily ordering in cafes by mid week! The style appealed to her immediately, there is a gentle sense of humour, the headings/topics were very suited to kids and the extra titbits of information about Spanish children's lives were all lapped up - we would not have tried churros with chocolate were it not for this book! The layout sets pictures alongside English and Spanish, with a phonetic pronounciation of the Spanish. That was a real bonus as it enabled our 9 year old to say the words/phrases without having to ask us the whole time. (I even had my pronounciation corrected a couple of times!) It was a book enjoyed by all of us - I used it a few times to check pronounciation and my linguistically challenged partner enjoyed reading it as much as his daughter and said he learned more with this book than with my "grown-up" phrase books! It was much more fun and very user friendly. I would thoroughly recommend this book - and will certainly invest in the Italian and French editions when we visit those countries as it was such a success!
