Editorial Reviews:
The fifth edition since 1986, the new version of this perennial tells you everything you could possibly need to know about getting or changing jobs. Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions is actually much more than its title suggests. It tells you, among other useful things, how to find jobs to apply for, how to write a CV, how to dress and what to bone up on in advance as well as showing you how to answer the questions which the interviewer throws at you.

Perhaps the potential employer will phone you once she or he has received your CV. "Put a smile on your face. It improves the timbre of your voice," advises Martin Yate who also suggests you avoid yes/no answers on the phone because they say nothing about your ability. In a face-to-face interview, he tells you, listen to the question. Don't answer one which hasn't been asked. You shouldn't provide superfluous information either and never attempt to do an interview without first doing your homework. You need to know everything you can find out about the company and the job you're being interviewed for. And remember that as well as showing that you can do the job you have to convince the employer that you will fit in, make a contribution and be manageable.

What do you say if asked "When do you expect a promotion?" or "What is your greatest strength?" Or even "What was the last book you read?" Yate provides sensible suggestions. It's all practical, down-to-earth advice and it's not surprising that Great Answers to Tough Interview Questions has sold more than 4 million copies during its 15 year life. If you're preparing for an interview and you're serious, studying this book would be a useful part of the preparation. --Susan Elkin

Customer Reviews:
Needs serious updating
This booked feels very dated. There are fashions in interview questions, like everything else and this doesn't seem to have been updated since 1986. Tartan suits anyone?
Very disappointing
I was very disappointed by the interview material in this supposedly great book. The answers suggested are long out of date and would be instantly recognisable to any experienced interviewer as being cliches. I am amazed that this sort of 'clockwork' approach to interview preparation still finds an audience.

That being said, I did enjoy some of the other elements of the book - particularly Mr Yates material on using the telephone and finding a job in the hidden jobs market. His book on internet jobhunting is quite good too.

Avoid this one if you are goiong to be facing a skilled interviewer - it will just lead you into trouble.

An essential for all job hunters!
I recently had a job interview for the first time in years and this book really saved my skin! I realised from the off that my interview was what the book describes as a "stress interview" - had I not read this first I would undoubtedly have said all the WRONG things while thinking I was giving the interview of a lifetime! Sections are included on how to get an interview, dress, and deal with tests as well as how to answer questions. The book is incredibly easy to read and may well secure you the job of your dreams!
excellent
This books gives excellent insight into what interviewers ask, what they are trying to find out & what kinds of answers they should be given. I've found this very useful on several occasions and it's very easy use because you don't need to read it from start to finish. Using this book is like cheating!
Brilliant
I was rubbish (and still are to an extent) at job interviews. But this book must have given me 70% of the answers to the questions at my last interview.

I got the job as well.
