Almost a modern Barbara Pym

I thoroughly enjoyed The Bluebird Cafe - it is funny and warm, but still has a gentle bite. No complicated plot or deep issues - instead an engaging tale of modern life but, unusually, without undue angst, overwhelming sentimentality or a clumsy message. I especially enjoyed the asides describing the characters' private thoughts and feelings which are belied, as so often in life, by their public speech and actions. A refreshing read which promises well for Smith's future efforts.

A wonderfully witty, well-observed novel that manages to find poetry in the simple everyday things of life. An author to follow.

A nice little story - pleasant characters, mild humour, original. Short and sweet.
