Customer Reviews:
Not really good, not too bad
I bought this book, along with 'Magic in the wind' which is the previous story in the series, because I read about the series in the author's website and thought it very interesting. Well, up to a point it is. The writing itself is beautifull (Ms. Feehan is obviously a good writer), the drawing of the town and its inhabitants very well done and the general idea more or less original. The main problem is that the 'magic' is not very well writen; in my oponion the author just gave the heroins cool abilities and didn't bother with details, like defining what it is they are or do.
The second problem is that there are many female protagonists. This is Kate's book, but her sisters occupy much of it (particularly Hannah and her interaction with Jonas, which was so intriguing that it detracted from the main story). Also, the author didn't do a very good job of drawing the characters of all the sisters from the beginning. There are obvious differences in habits and preferances, but they are only skin-deep; underneath they could all be the same woman.
Finally, there is the eternal problem with series of novels: the book must stand alone, but it must also promote the overall storyline of the series. In this the book has problems, because I, having read the first book, found the repetition boring, but I think people who haven't read it will be left with questions. Also, if the author's idea was to provoke an interest in the rest of the series, it worked only partially: I would buy Hannah's story when it is released, because her interaction with Jonas seems interesting and there is apparentley a secret about him to be revealed, but the two sisters in between, Abby and Libby, didn't catch my interest at all.
the twilight before christmas - my review
kate drake one of seven sisters gifted with the art of witchcraft, returns home to sea haven. she is a succesful novelist and decides to open a bookstore, using the old but historic run-down mill.
former u.s army ranger matt granite, who is now working in the familys contracting business decides to help out with the renevations. he is in love with kate, she is also in love with him.
when an earthquake cracks the mill's foundations, it reveals a crypt, that kate senses holds a centuries old evil. now it is unleashed.
it's coming after kate and matt vows to guard her from dusk until dawn.
with her sister's help kate knows she will have to summon all of her powers to battle the darkness that awaits them......
this is the second novel i have read by christine feehan, and although this book wasn't one of her best it was readable.
i think what lets this book down,is the central charactor of kate, for a powerful witch she was very timid and quite annoying at times.
i enjoyed reading this book, but i feel that it wasn't quite believable at times. these powerful women - witches, are too readily accepted by the towns folk and no-one really questions all that they do. it's also not a very powerful book, the storyline would normally work well, but this is too much like easy reading.
it's a nice little story and i look forward to the future storys of these women.
Forgettable
Having been a keen fan of Christine Feehan all I can say is "WORDS FAIL ME"
The characters are forgettable, the plot mediocre and I actually found myself skipping pages hoping the nail bitting story she normally delivers would miraculously appear!!
I have waited for months in suspence for this book.WHAT A LET DOWN.
I can honestly say I wouldn't bother buying the sequel.
I wouldn't go as far as plagiarism, but having read James Herbert "THE FOG" and Nora Roberts stories about the sisters with supernatural powers this is a mis-match of similar plot and characters.
Matt obviously needs therapy if he has to marry in between waiting for Kate his only true love, "EXCUSE ME ARE WE REAL?"
My final comment must be "I WAS ROBBED!"
A must read
This is the second of the magical sisters series focussing on Kate Drake, the best selling novelist.

Kate returns home to Sea Haven and decides to open a bookstore in a charming but run-down historic mill. She recruits former US Army Ranger Matt Granite, now a local contractor to assist. An earthquake cracks the mills foundations and reveals a burial crypt and Kate senses that a centuries old evil has been unleashed and that it's coming after her.

All of the sisters and local characters from Sea Haven introduced in the first of the series appear in this new book.

I found the book to be a brilliant read and can't wait for the next book in the series.
