Kaplan does it better

I had to decide between Barron's and Kaplan as the mentors to my GMAT preparations. I chose Kaplan partly because they are new age honchos and partly because of their professional expertise. However, what really influenced me most was that everyone I knew who used Barron's didnt perform well at their GMATs! And how did I perfrom? I got a 670 in my first and only attempt. Not bad I must say! I really liked the way Kaplan slowly builds up momentum both in its book as well as the CD-ROM. The "extras" on the CD-ROM are an excellent stress relieving mechanism after one has endured 4 hours of gruelling practise sessions. And why have I given it only 4 stars? Well, I needed someone to share the blame of not getting into the MBA schools of my choice!

Its the Daddy....

Probably the clearest book on the market. A few gripes:

i) The software, although good, tends to have harder question than the real GMAT. I was regularly scoring 100 less on the Kaplan test compared to the ETS Powerprep software (which _is_ correct)

ii) Like most of these manuals, its printed on grotty paper. When you're paying this much for a book you like some decent quality paper.

Overall - well worth getting.

Good test prep

The book has a good overview of the GMAT exam, the test sections and the various question types. It is a good starter to somebody who does not know anything about this exam. The greatest asset is the included exercise and test software that has good training sessions explaining each question type with examples and tips for solving the questions quickly and also full length CAT tests.

You can continue with the GMAT 800 (Kaplan) book which has detailed explanations of the more difficult test questions.
