Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Ellie is reluctantly called in by neighbour Kate to try and discover who poisoned a wealthy financier's dog. It is soon apparent that the poison was meant for the financier himself, who Ellie takes an instant dislike to. It is clear there is more going on than anyone will tell her, and when Ellie's unpleasant daughter Diana becomes involved with the finacier in order to solve her own financial problems, it is clear she has put Ellie's own life in danger. Arthur Kingsley will stop at nothing to achieve what he wants, and the site of Ellie's house could be ripe for re-development. Ellie finds an unlikely ally in untangling the whole problem in Arthur Kingsley's wife - Felicity. But she needs help from all her wide network of friends in order to survive. A brilliantly complicated plot and a look at the world of high finance make this a very readable addition to the Ellie Quicke series.
