Magic and mayhem in Scotland
|
Adam Sinclair is a well respected psychiatrist as well as being a Scottish aristocrat, but he is also Master of the Hunt, a group of magicians and psychics who work to counter Black Magic and Black magicians.
This is the first of a short series and anyone who remembers Dennis Wheatley's Duc de Richlieu will notice a resemblance, not so much in the writing as in the setting, a Scottish baronet, who has a prestigious job, moves in society, has a beautiful house and important friends. Sinclair doesn't notmally fight Nazis (as did de Richlieu & Co), but a group of Black magicians often belonging to the Lodge of the Lynx.
The Adept is about foiling the Lodge's attempt to steal magical books and treasure once belonging to a 14th century Scots mgician, which is now guarded by the fairies, this also involves stealing the Fairy Flag of Clan MacLeod (which really does exist). The book is very atmospheric and the descriptions of Scotland are excellent.
It is the sort of book I would take on a long plane/train journey and close to find that I was already at my destination. Well worth reading, but nothing like Kurtz's Derenyi novels.
