Great Series Of Novels That I Have Read Over 27 Years
|
I picked this book up in a shop at age 9. It was a little to advanced for me at the time and I tried again a few years later. I loved it.
I also loved the sequel that I found in a library 7 years later.
With great joy I found a copy of the third a few weeks ago ....24 years after I had read the second book.
The characters are well defined. The stories are exciting but down-beat.
The pilots are all to aware of their slim chances of surviving for long and this is a running theme in the books with regard to the life choices they make. The books do not have invincible characters that live forever regardless of the number of battles they experience ( eg. Richard Sharpe ). This adds credibility to the experience.
Although relatively short books, they cram a great deal into each page and I have devoured each one very quickly. Also there is a clever writing twist in one of the first two in the series. I think these books were probably written by more than one author for a mass market wanting exciting war novels in the 1970's. However I feel this series is the very top end of the range and very enjoyable.
The characters have stayed with me all my life and I even named my first dog after one of them.

Nice flying book
|
This is a book that in an easy way lets you in on how it was to be a fighterpilot in the early days of WW2. It leats you in on not just the battles but also the battles the pilots had to endure on the ground in actually trying to live, and not just fight. A really nice book and one that is suitable as the first book for someone with an interest of flight.
