dissappointingly average
As a first year medical student I had a lot of trouble with Baynes. Although it is quite comprehensive, it is full of typos and mistakes which distort the meaning of the text; and the diagrams are average at best. Even our lectures tell us not to trust this book. My advice is to invest in a decent textbook like Lehninger or even Devlins, which, even though they are a lot more dense, are infinitely more reliable.

Includes all the essentials of biochemistry
This text is perfect for the undergraduate medical course. It includes all the essential biochemistry needed and indicates further reading at the end of each chapter. Importantly, it frequently uses clinical examples and there is an excellent use of clear and colourful diagrams (although in places some diagrams/text were perhaps a little too compact for complete ease of reading). There are also a variety of revision questions at the back which are useful for exam practice. Also good is that this book is accompanied by a CD-ROM which gives the reader a link to the "fleshandbones" website offering a free additional resource to students in the form of revision tests, quizzes and images to download.

A clearly written and well illustrated undergraduate text
This textbook combines clearly written descriptions of all aspects of clinical biochemistry combined with excellent artwork. The inclusion of clinical examples to illustrate important points is especially useful
