When you have produced minor masterpieces like Trout Bum, Sex, Death & Fly Fishing and Another Lousy Day In Paradise, inevitably it must become progressively more difficult to match them but John Gierach has pulled it off again - just. Standing In a River.. is not quite as pithy, humorous or philosphically perceptive as some of its predecessors and inevitably, for those who have read the earlier titles it is a little repetitive. Hence the four stars rather than five. The others are all five plus as far as I am concerned. Having said that, I just love this man's books and I have re-read them over many times and never fail to be informed, amused or moved. Frequently all of these things. Standing In A River continues in this vein and several passages really struck home. Anybody who can do this for me whilst using fly fishing as his medium, is a self confessed awkward son of a b.... and loves dogs and the blues has my vote every time. A master of his craft - reminds me in a strange way of Arthur Ransome in his Rod and Line period. Great stuff.
