This Book is Worthless

This book is not worthy of a lengthy review so I will keep it short. This book is nothing more than attempt by a person who would have been called a "house Negro" during the days of slavery to stroke the ego of White people. He defends the oppressors of minorities while offering no solutions of substance for remedying the Black condition. His rhetoric is consistent with that of other Black Americans like Clarence Thomas who ignore the racism and discrimination that are at the very heart of America. He also fails to address why White people continue to dominate a society where they are fast becoming a minority. Institutional and social racism allow and ensure this outcome, yet the only reponse that Steele has to this is to denounce the stigmatism that he claims is created by Affirmative Action. White people will love the book because in the words of Steele it gets them, "off the hook". Black people in touch with reality will not like the book because it suggests their current suffering and history is all in their minds.

As a radical feminist and Woman of Color, I find it incredible that Steele is so complacent about the monstrous bigotry, racism, and sexism that we face day in and day out. Mr. Steele is the enemy of anyone who is not a priviledged white. He is also, by extension, an enemy of women, and I DEPLORE the way white male conservatives are eating out of his hand (though it is hardly surprising). I believe his first book was not *quite* so conservative, so perhaps he is simply confused this decade.

This is a need read book. Insightful and bravely done.Gives a person a glimse into the mind set of the left and how a once much needed influence in our society has gone amuck.

Good Book

Great stuff from Mr.Steele but like others I question his view in that they come from a ivory tower. I myself being a person of conservative values and character still face and witness racial discrimination on a daily basis.At best Mr. Steele's book gives us a better understanding of Black liberal thought and the PC movement it perpetuates, but lacks in remedies for overcoming the racism minorities and specifically African Americans still face.

Mr. Steele makes an eloquent case that "redemptive liberalism," designed not to actually correct problems but to assuage guilt for past sins, has not solved any of the problems of the black underclass, and in fact, is simply a form of lip service used by liberals and black power mongers. He makes clear, and argues persuasively, that "individual rights," not "group rights" are what made this country great and what the Constitution guaranteed and was designed to protect. (Readers of Ayn Rand's works will recognize the same championing of the individual and individual rights in Mr. Steele's book). I believe the depth of his arguments make a factual, logical, objective, and unemotional debate against his position extremely difficult. If a white author had written this book he or she would have be attacked, dismissed, and verbally lynched by the liberals and black power elite. Mr. Steele defines himself as a "black conservative," which most people would consider an oxymoron. The fact that he is a black man, and therefore could not possibly be considered a racist (as a white person writing exactly the same words would be) probably keeps the liberal media, liberal politicians, and the black power elite from mounting an attack on his work...which in turn simply reinforces his arguments! I believe so strongly in the conclusions of this book that I am seriously considering sending a copy to every Senator and Congressman in the United States. It's that good and it's that important...for all of us.
