Customer Reviews:
Dull, but necessary
Hmm...a book on syntax..hardly going to be gripping is it? However, it's a real help if you're actually studying the stuff, and has these great little exercises at the end of each chapter which are not only useful but also loads of fun! Ok, perhaps a slight exaggeration on the fun part. Also, if you're as blessed as I was to have NBR himself teaching you, it's invaluable. You'll never get his little jokes if you don't.
Great introduction to syntax
What an excellent introduction to the subject, from knowing nothing at all it led by steady, understandable steps to quite thorough analysis of complex sentences. Well written enough to be a pleasure to read. I did find however that the complete lack of any kind of prescriptive analysis was unfortunate - this book presents a purely descriptive view of the subject. A wonderful book nevertheless.
Sentence structure for the reluctant syntax student!
The book is very straightforward and explains English syntax in a logical way. The feature I really liked was the end - of - chapter exercises which allowed you to practice what you had (hopefully) learnt. What I also liked were the whacky sentences he used such as, "Malatesta has been misappropriating the funds." Mad or what?

Still, with the aid of this book, I passed a course that, on first sight, seemed impossible!

I was a student of Noel Burton-Roberts 1987-90
At the time I may not have appreciated it, but this is perhaps the most concise analysis of the underlying processes of English grammar; also very enlightening to other grammars, both purely linguistic and otherwise: including Programming and database design (!) - basically my current job. One crown lost for slightly quaint textbook format.
A Book That Teaches You How To Approach English Syntax!
This book, written by one of the distinguished professors of English Syntax, presents to you an elementary approach to analysing English sentence structures. Well-illustrated with ample tree diagrams, the book should be user-friendly. Useful and recommended for students taking English Syntax or syntax in general. The book also provides a list of further reading at the end, which introduces you to more advanced books on syntactic theories, English grammar and language in general.
