MY FAVOURITE PIECE OF CHEEK!
Mavis Cheek is our funniest woman writer and this is her funniest book - the observations of middle and upper class manners and pretentions are spot on and the dialogue superb. It`s amazing that no one has filmed any of the books of this talented and prolific author - if you only read one piece of Cheek - make it this one!

Not my favourite Mavis Cheek book
Mavis Cheek undoubtably has a wonderful turn of phrase and this book is full of some real gems. However, I didn't feel any great affinty for the characters and at points really didn't care what happened to them. Dog Days, also my M.Cheek, had totally the opposite effect and is a brilliant (and funny) read.

My favourite

This is my favourite of all her books so far. There were some real laugh out loud moments for me. Diana is a wonderful character and I love her drunken acts of impropriety and remorse. There were some exquisite moments of pure farce mixed with the usual witty look at middle aged life that allow me to look forward to that phase in my life with pleasure rather than dread, and that can't be a bad thing.
