Editorial Reviews:
A young man arrives in the northern town of Spent, planning to stay for just one night with his aunt and uncle before attending a job interview the next morning. It will be several weeks before he leaves the town in the final episode of this six-part series, following a terrifying ordeal at the hands of his toad-loving, hygiene-obsessed relatives. Welcome to the sinister, hilarious world of the League of Gentlemen, populated by a cast of distinctly warped individuals, all played by three members of a four-man writing team.

The League started life in the early 1990s, evoking old-style revues with their name and their tuxedo-clad performances. The material, however, bore little relation to that of genteel 1950s performers--the League's dark, twisted sketches have seen them likened to both Monty Python and David Lynch. After winning the Perrier award at Edinburgh in 1997, and before turning their attentions to television, they produced On The Town With The League Of Gentlemen, a Sony award-winning series for Radio 4.

This welcome release from the BBC Radio Collection contains the complete series, and is an essential purchase for the many fans of the television version who missed the earlier incarnation. Many of the storylines are similar to the TV version, but there is plenty of material which will be new to listeners, including characters who did not make it onto the screen--and for anyone new to the League, the radio edition easily stands on its own as one of the best comedy series of recent years. Running time approx 3 hours --John Oates

Customer Reviews:
a must for all LOG fans
This tape is more for the hardcore fans, as it could be a bit difficult to understand for first timers. But absolutley excellent for those who enjoy the show. Very very funny tape, with most of the characters from the tv show. With a few different characters such as the hilarious minute shopkeeper. These tapes are well worth the money, and worth listening to time and time again. If you dont laugh at them, you are either deaf or dead.
Great but why not on CD???
Fantastically offbeat and macabre humour. My only gripe is that I can only listen to it in the car - why don't they release it on CD???? In this day and age, the cassette tape is an anachronism.
If you have the first TV series, you don't need this
I have to say I'm a little dissapointed after listening to this tape. I agree that it's interesting to hear The League of Gents from their early days, but 95% of the content is exactly the same as the first series - only I think that they've improved since this tape was made.

I'd say this is only for hardcore fans.

Excellent,comedy at it's best!
Just thought i would let everyone know how good this actually is and why you should buy it.If like me you are a fan of the TV series then you cannot afford to let this slip by you. There are some sketches and scenes from the TV show(but it's interesting to hear how they first sounded before they were finly tuned for their series on TV).There are also some sketches not shown on the TV show. All in all a massive laugh from 4 very very funny and talented performers(yes 4 Mr Jeremy Dyson)A must BUY.
Great stuff, kept me laffin' loads on holiday!
This is warped, very funny humour at it's best. It IS noticeably different in places to the two (much, much darker) TV series that followed, but is still funny and has some characters that never made it to the TV series (how could they have visually portrayed tiny shopkeeper Mr. Ingleby, for instance?) Some characters and some sections of the scripts will be familiar, but they're still funny nevertheless, and I suspect this is rather closer to their original live performances than the TV series. Anyway, get this classic tape & laugh youself sick, before the team get rich & (more)famous and move out to work in Hollywood... (this would be a bad move: remember what happened to the legendary James Whale?)
