I knew it started with a "W"

It's a shame The Goon Show as a whole never made it big in "The States" as it did in England. I think a lot of shows like "Saturday Night Live" and the recently dreadful mistake "Hype" could learn a thing or two about writing decent comedy from Spike Milligan. I say this speaking as an American and quite tired of sketch comedies that basically consist of a helping of political and pop culture parodies as well as tired reacurring characters that return every week and utter some obnoxious catch phrase. The Goons are a blessing to me and Peter Sellers, Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan are incredibly funny. There are so many great episodes on this CD and just when you think you've picked out your favourite, then another comes along and whacks you right between the eyes. Although, I must admit my favourite episode on this is "The Sinking of the Westminster Pier". Spike Milligan's bits of poetry is howlingly funny as well as Peter Sellers's assortment of incidental characters. All the episodes have these great moments and the usual mangling of words that just make the Goons so brilliant. If you haven't heard the Goons before and you are curious to hear them for the first time, I highly recommend you make this CD your first. You will be hooked. Have a glass of water. Drink as much as you like. The basement's flooded.
