This is the first book in a full series, at the moment there are 12 books with a further two to finish off act 4 of the series. The 4 acts comprise of 4 books for act 1 (The Deverry series), 4 books for act 2 (The Westlands), 3 books for act 3 (The Dragon Mage) and 3 books for act 4 (The Silver Wyrm) two of which are due to be published. I was given this book to read by a friend, at the time there were only eight books and I have had to patiently wait for the others. The first book is a bit bewildereing at first but push on past the first couple of chapters and you will become engrossed and well rewarded. I couldnt put the books down and with each book I got more and more involved, these are the only books I have ever read that could compare to the Lord of the Rings triology, and I actually think they are better as you become more envolved with the characters, and their are lots of twist and turns intwined with the past, present and future. If you enjoyed lord of the rings this series is definately up your street. My chap was working away for a couple of weeks, so I gave him this book to keep him occupied on an evening, he is not a book worm like me atall, but he loved it and we would have great discussion on what was going on as I was always a book ahead of him, so it appeals to men as you will understand when you read the book and women alike. Brilliant, absolutely Brilliant.

A Grand Debut

Daggerspell is the first book in the 'Deverry Cycle' and it kicks off the series with Katherine Kerr's trademark writing style. The story is instantly involving and you find yourself being drawn into the characters lives in a way that leaves you desperate to read on. However, the book can drone occaisionly, but this is few and far between and in no way lessens the experience of reading this fntasy novel. The book is a high fantasy novel, set in a world with no technology with humans and elves and other indiginant species, but Katheine Kerr's take on the old set is very different to that of other authors. The book is seperated into different timelines, the past and the present/future, half of the book being devoted to each. It becomes apparent, as you read on, why the books are written this way. Daggerspell is part of several sets of books and it only begins the thread of storylines, so beware if you like this book you will have to the others. I've read many fantasy authors and i find Katherine Kerr's novels emmensly refreshing!
