Editorial Reviews:
The 11 short stories in this collection are contemporary with Luke Skywalker's adventures. The book opens with "Interlude at Darkknell", a short novel by Timothy Zahn and Michael A. Stackpole set just before the events of the film Star Wars: A New Hope. This fast-moving tale of intrigue and treachery follows Imperial agent Ysanne Isard's attempts to regain the plans of the original Death Star after they are stolen by Rebel agents.

Most of the stories take place in the years following Return of the Jedi, when the New Republic is consolidating its hold over the galaxy. Alongside established authors are some new names, such as the pairing of Chris Cassidy and Tish Pahl, who contribute two good stories. The thoughtful "Conflict of Interest" by Laurie Burns sees a New Republic intelligence agent discovering that the battle against Imperial forces isn't as black and white as she would like to believe. Paul Danner's "No Disintegrations, Please" features the bounty hunter Boba Fett and there is a new Mara Jade story from Timothy Zahn. Other stories involve Jedi knights, scheming Imperial agents, treacherous Hutts, space battles and treasure hunts--all the ingredients necessary for an exciting read. --Elizabeth Sourbut

Customer Reviews:
A little disappointing.
THE STORIES:
Aside from 'Interlude At Darkknell', a novella featuring Hal Horn, a young Ysanne Isard and Garm Bel-Iblis, this book contains ten short stories taken from the Star Wars Adventure Journal. The tales range from the adventures of Dark Jedi to the story of how Mara Jade aquired her beloved ship Jade's Fire.

WHAT'S GOOD:
Mara Jade stories are always a joy to read, having both the Force element and the grittier die-hard aspects of the Star Wars universe. There's also a brilliantly written story in which the implacable Boba Fett eliminates and entire Imperial garrison in an attempt to capture one man. However, my personal favourite is 'Simple Tricks' in which a smuggler and a con artist find themselves in the company of the Jedi Knight Kyp Durron, reviled for his mass-murder at Carida. This story shows us something that we never read in Kyp's mainstream tales, his struggle with his conscience after his redemption. It also acts as an excellent prelude to the novel 'Darksaber'.

WHAT'S BAD:
The quality of the stories in this anthology in general is markedly lower than those in 'Tales From The Empire', being as they are, the ones that didn't make the cut the first time around. The Zahn/Stackpole collaboration novella gives some interesting history to their characters, but cannot stand up in comparison to 'Side Trip'. Also, 'Day of the Sepulchral Night' is one of the worst Star Wars short stories I've ever read.

An excellent gap-filler
One of the biggest queries for me when I saw Star Wars was "What is this empire?" and "What is it that they're all rebelling against?". Apart from being obviously evil by blowing up planets willy-nilly, there's little to demonstrate that to the person on-the-ground, the Empire was a bad regime (unless the ground you're inhabiting is currently on the incinerate list).

So enter this book, which beautifully fills in some detail into a dark area. Coupled with Shadows of the Empire, this book is a great insight into what the Empire was like, and why everyone was so hell-bent to destroy it.

Nothing's ever perfect but this is fantastic!
For a die-hard Luke lover like me this should've been a big let-down but the stories are fascinating and fill in little gaps that you didn't even know were there! The short stories are bite-size chunks that sometimes leave you wanting more because they are so enthralling.

So if you want more background or just love that Star Wars this is definitely worth a look!

Brilliant.
Tales from the Empire include various differend stories, all of them interesting and exciting. Indeed, this book was so good it sucked me in and forced me to read it from cover to cover!
