Both my wife and I have read all 3 of Linda Acredolo & Susan Goodwyn's books: Baby Signs, Baby Minds and Baby Hearts. As far as we are concerned, they are the last word on child development. Neither of their 3 publications are "parenting books". Unlike other authors, Linda & Susan do not put forward a school of parenting regime or style that may or may not suit your child. Instead they write about babies, how they feel, what they think and why they do what they do. As this book points out, much of what is concretely known about baby development has only been revealed in studies carried out in the last 20-25 years. Linda and Susan describe the conclusions drawn from this research in an easy to understand manner. They write about the difficult issues facing all parents, the underlying causes behind problems and propose solutions that deal with the root causes and NOT the symptoms. We are first time parents and one of the big questions that we had was what to do when our baby starts to cry after we put him to bed for the night. We have had conflicting advice. Some authoritative writers say "leave them be, they will learn to quieten down themselves", whilst others say the exact opposite. We have since come to the conclusion that all of these people are simply guessing. In some cases, their advice are based on observing many hundreds of cases but the truth is, in order to know the effect of specific parenting decisions, you need to follow the development of children from birth to teens or beyond - only then, do you know the long term outcome. Thanks to Linda and Susan, we now know what to do for this particular problem as well as many others and more importantly, why!
