Out of Love

This is the first book by this author I have read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.I loved the family and even towards the end of the book I still didn't know which way the story would go. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading about the lives of everyday people and the ups and downs that life brings. I can't wait to read her other books, what a find.

Oh Dear!

I have read two other books by this author. The first one, Homing Instinct i very much enjoyed - laughed out loud! The second one, Class Act seemed to lose the energy of the first but good at times but having just read 'Out of Love' I find i am thoroughly disappointed & depressed. My 10 year old could have produced more interesting work. Lacking in compassion - Very boring - totally unsympathetic characters - I found myself missing out chunks of the book just to get to the end & leave the misery. Afraid its the last book by this author that i shall be purchasing.

Very disappointing

This was the first Diana Appleyard book that I have read, which I purchased following a favourable mag review. However I was very disappointed in the book. The first half was engaging and the characters were generally well-rounded and believable, but as the book progressed it seemed to be floundering. Several times I felt that the same ground was being covered again and again. The ending was a real let-down, almost as if the author had run out of steam, and the final chapter was simply trite. By the end of the story I felt no empathy for either the husband or the wife, and was left feeling simply depressed! I often pass books on to friends and neighbours but will not be recommending this to any of them.

Absolutely unputdownable!

I have just read Out of Love by Diana Appleyard, and I expected to enjoy it as I liked Homing Instincts. I have to say that I have more than enjoyed this book, it has had me gripped from start to finish. While not altogether agreeing with the mothers needs in the book as a stay at home mum myself, I still really felt for her in many ways, especially problems with teenagers, we all have them! Don't be put off by the previous review, you just must try this book!

Nowhere as good as her usual

I love Diane Appleyards books. Homing Instinct was one of the best books I've read. As a career woman and a mother, every word sank home. Its funny, beautifully written and so very true. Her second book, Class Instinct was also very good. This one, Out Of Love, I got as a birthday present. I'd been waiting for it to be published for ages. I found it depressing. I found it impossible to sympathise with the mother, who wanted her own life very much at the expense of everyone else, especially her children. There was very little optimism or humour in this book. Just a feeling of bleakness after reading it. Perhaps it is a more mature style of writing, but does mature have to be so weary and sad?
