Quite simply the funniest book I have ever read. Great for dipping into, or for a good long read on your own - I defy anyone to read through a chapter without laughing aloud. I have given this book to many friends and they are equally enthusiastic.
a bear-necesitie.......
this book was recommended to me by my father, upon returning home from university, it was a pleasant suprise to say the least. the story line sounded a bit far fetched as my dad tried to 'sell' it to me. the relationship between the bear and the human world is hillarious, and very true i am led to believe. the authors decline to animal like behaviour corresponds excellently with the bears humanisation. a refreshing read for everyone who has an open mind and is suseptable to a good laugh.
Funnier than it sounds...
Admittedly, the idea of a bear finding a manuscript, and heading off to the big city with dreams of 'making it' sounds like it would need a great leap of faith, but it really works. It's simply written, without conceit. A 'modern-day parable', but such a name sells it short. It's not just a humourous version of 'The Pearl', but it's strangely almost a grown-up version of Dr. Seuss. Logic which is confusing in it's simplicity, but you just go along with it, the rewards are huge. Will make you laugh out loud, so public transport could become an interesting experience. Give this book a go.
People need to read more classics.
I do not wish to digress entirely on the ineffable brilliance of this novel which I read early-2000, because albeit I found it one of the best novels I had read of the year, let alone ever, I found that not many know of its conception, and that it was rather a one-off for Kotzwinkle, who is an extremely irreverent, satiric and classy writer. "The Bear Went Over The Mountain" is more than what Terry Pratchett, master of comic fantasy, claims it is on the cover, and gets rather near to the wonderment of one of Pratchett's better works. Kotzwinkle has created a contemporary fairy tale as well as a hilarious humorous fantasy gem, and those who have not heard of it should go out directly and purchase it. It is a magical novel, in its scathing injustices, satiric set-pieces, irreverent inventions, and saddening moral. It's damned funny too.
