A Stunning Book

The heroine Ella is completely believable - not every male author can think himself so successfully into the mind of a woman. The standout passage for me is where Ella and Walter, her husband, are saying goodbye before he leaves England to serve in the Far East. Tender, compassionate and very moving. It blew me away when I first read it, and still does. The portrayal of working-class Northern life during the war rings true - my Dad came from a similar background and the dignity and integrity of the people comes over strongly. This is the second book in a trilogy and I recommend them all.
