Utter delight

The Matchmaker of Perigord is a truly original book. Completely quirky but utterly delightful. I was recommended the book and at first was not sure. However I soon sank into this bouffant world of unusual characters. The writing is brilliant and the visual imagery it creates highly amusing. When I finished reading it, I felt I left behind a confection of warmth that I wanted to dip into again. Second time round reading made me appreciate even more the cleverness of the prose. For a treat, read this!

Laugh out loud
|
A gloriously dotty and richly-textured comic novel that was my perfect holiday companion.
The tale is of a down-on-his luck French barber who reinvents himself as a professional matchmaker in a village filled with ancient rivalries as eccentric as the people who hold them.
When a wealthy widow moves into the local Chateau, the matchmaker's heart is torn between his new profession and his secret longing.
But the joy of the book is not so much its plot, whose conclusion is obvious enough, but in the storytelling that gets you there.
Stuart has a wonderful eye for detail and an utterly infectious narrative style that made this reader fall in love with all of her characters, and their surroundings.
The result is a warm-hearted reminder of the sheer absurtity of courtship, an affectionate caricature of small-town France, and a laugh-out-loud romp that defies cynicism.
