For anyone who was between 12 and 14 immediately following the 2nd world war, this book will recall the innocence of childhood compared to today. It is funny, sad, wistful and charming but, as the title suggests, hints at darker days to come. It describes the life of a small village, Farnborough, near to the newly established Harwell Atomic Energy Research station. This establishment is subject to much speculation in the village. Mainly the story is about the lives of the villagers and their children. There are a few characters whose backgrounds are a mystery. The goosip concerning these people we can all identify with and when the truth is revealed it comes a a complete shock. A great read
