A brilliant book - accessible to the younger reader without losing any of its impact for the older (including adults). You don't have to be a cat lover to appreciate this book, its theme covers issues of bullying, self-discovery, friendship. I can't wait to read the sequel.

A pretty thrilling read

Although this is classed as a children's book,there is plenty here for any adult to enjoy.'Varjak Paw' is basically the story of a voyage of discovery for a cat that finds itself alone for the first time.He must learn special skills in order to survive and the story is told at a brisk pace and never flags.
It must be said that the illustrations in this book are very impressive and help the story grab the imagination.All told S F Said has done a fine job in building up a world as seen through the eyes of a cat and in the main this is a gripping tale that keeps you hooked right until the end.It was only towards the end of the book that I felt that the story lost it's way a little and some of the situations became a tad unconvivcing.Having said that though,this is a book that I am happy to recommend and I speak as an adult when I say it most definitely isn't just for children although they will probably love it.
I give this four out of five stars and would gladly read the follow up book to catch up on more of Varjak Paw's adventures.

The skills of the cat!

Varjak Paw is a Mesopotamian blue kitten who lives with his family in a house which overlooks the city. He and his family are in great danger but only he can sense it so his granddad tells him about the way of Jalal who is his ancestor. The skills of Jalal are slow time, moving circles and shadow walking. Varjak needs to find a dog from outside but he must use and learn the seven skills of Jalal first and bring back the dog.
I like the book because it is very exciting and serious and funny all at the same time. I recommend this book ten out of ten. Somebody already has because it won the Smarties Award 2003! When I looked for the names to write my review, I started reading it again.

Wow! What a book

My eight year old son picked this book as a bedtime read and it was certainly a great choice.
It follows the exploits of a an escaped house cat on a mission to save his ungrateful family. On the way he makes friends, meets enemies and learns the secrets of cat martial arts in his dream meetings with an ancient ancestor. You don't get much more original than that.
It is delightfully written with a good mixture of excitement, humour, danger and allegory. The characters are well constructed and believeable The good guys are likeable and the baddies are sinister which makes for a great adventure yarn.
The Illustration is also brilliant and fits well with the story and the text.
My kids love this book and so do I!

VARJAK PAW IS THE BEST BOOK IN THE WORLD!

This book is just too good! I mean like, How good can a book be? Well, if there is, it can only be Varjak paw! I read this this book in 3 days because it was so good. My favourite character in Varjak Paw is Tam because of her obsession about food, and my least favourite character is Sally Bones because she kept on hurting poor Varjak, (even though he gets his revenge on her in the second book, The Outlaw Varjak Paw ) and she only had one eye, which was really creepy! I recommend this book for ALL ages. VARJAK PAW IS THE BEST!
