I first read this book to my 6 year old son (now 15) and then used it as a class teacher to read as our class book, It is a delightful tale for 5-8 year olds to follow as well as for confident readers to read themselves. Please Please buy or borrow it and you will see what I mean! I am now rediscovering it again with my 8 year old stepdaughter and she loves Scales' and Sam's adventures just as much, as it relates to what children know about school life (although class 4 are one of the best behaved classes for Miss Green I know!)There are 4 books in the series, one for each term of one school year and then one when they move up to be the top class in the infants. Best to read them in order. I hope it is published again at some time!

Olivia is five and is in primary one. She adores the stories about Class 4, identifying with the everyday classroom situations the children find themselves in. Being five, she quite happily accepts the presence of a dragon in the classroom, and wishes for one in her classroom, although she thinks even a rabbit would be nice. The stories also help Olivia to discuss and understand some of the new situations which are found when you begin school life and can be alarming - the ups and downs of forming friendships, the rough and tumble of the playground, making mistakes ( she loved reading about Sam getting his 'b's and 'd's confused!) and mums and teachers not understanding why you do what you do! Olivia was deperate to read more about the children and the dragon, so now we've ordered the series. Lots of lovely bedtime reading, probably over and over again!
