A rocky start but unputdownable!

Having read Personal Shopper very recently (my first Carmen Reid) and thoroughly enjoyed it (I loved the characters and the story so much), I decided to try Did the Earth Move because the synopsis sounded enticing. I was a little disappointed up to page 60 because page after page of not explicit sexual activity, exactly, but certainly a big feature (I suppose the title should have warned me!)and I was finding myself becoming disappointed in the story never seeming to getting a wiggle on.... but then came the moment when the author got into her stride and the story became fabulous. The characters came together and I reached the point where I was enjoying the story so much I couldn't put the book down.
Yep, after page 60 the following 355 pages made up for it and I was rewarded for my patience (which is lucky because I've got to the stage in my life where if a book hasn't absorbed me by the first few pages it's quite likely to find itself dumped!)
Highly recommended - and yes, I'm definitely going to read the rest of Carmen's books!

Fantastic Read

Wow, wow, wow, what a fantastic read. An insight into the life of a single mother who is struggling to bring up her small children in the madness of a busy city. Although completely light hearted, this book does make you realise that you can be happy in life and love and that money is not the be all and end all. I want this content life!!!

Did the earth move?

Having really enjoyed Three in a Bed, I was pleased to see Did the Earth Move on the bookshelves, and thought the author's second book a great read. It is in the same vein, but different, from Three in a Bed, and I found its main character Eve almost inspirational to read about. It is a feel good story with plenty to keep the reader going till the end, and so much to relate to.

I'm not convinced

Having read Carmen Reid's first book, Three in a Bed, I was eagerly awaiting the second. However, I'm afraid it was a bit of a disappointment. The main character, Eve, seemed somehow rather cold, and I found myself unable to identify with her and warm to her as I did Bella in Three in a Bed. The plot kept me interested, and I did like the territory that Reid explores, particularly the relationship that Eve's son has (I don't want to give too much away!), but I felt the story was marred by Eve herself. For a character who was meant to be very laid back and understanding, I thought she was a little too uptight, and her inability to read the feelings of her ex, to whom she was supposed to have been a soul mate, was unbelivable. All in all, I did enjoy the book, but having been so bowled over by Three in a Bed, it just didn't live up to what I was expecting. If you haven't read either of Reid's books, I would definitely recommend Three in a Bed over this.

Laughed out loud

|
This is a lovely book, as soon as I'd finished (which didn't take long as I couldn't put it down once I'd started)I was looking for anything else by the same author. It had me laughing out loud at points, and teary eyed at others. My copy is now dog-eared as it has been passed from friend to friend.
