Not just for Kids!

"Maurice" is a gripping alternative fairytale for kids set in an imaginary world. So what? Well, this book manages to captivate the adult reader too, drawing everyone in with Maurice's relentless humanity and the everyday politics of life. It's more a satire on life than a kids' fairy tale; like all Pratchett books, it takes the world on at an angle and asks "what if?". This book will both stimulate and entertain readers young and old. It's a blast of a read, though a bit short for a "decent novel" - good thing it isn't one! The best Pratchett book out at the moment, in my opinion.

Pratchett goes well with the rats.

The Pratchett humour is hilarious in itself, and here he has created a fun cat and funny rattie characters: What would happen if the animals started to be able to think and act kinda like humans? Would they miss their 'old' lives, and how would their society evolve? Pratchett gives a good (and fun) suggestion to this question, with Maurice the cat, a boy and a lot of cool rats in the theme of an old and wellknown tale. Being a rat owner myself, I have noticed how often rats are displayed as sneaky evil rodents or at best: creatures you really don't want to meet down an even lit alley. Here, Pratchett gives their best sides a very good credit - while maintaining the rattie nature. If a rat lover, then this book is a must. And if you're 'just' a Discworld and Pratchett fan, this is certainly a nice addendum to the great and fun world called 'Discworld'.

The Pied Piper of Discworld

Brilliant! Taking place after Moving Pictures was written, Maurice is a cat who has undegone the "change" and meets up with the magically altered rats living underneath the Unseen University in Ankh-Morpork. With their flute-playing kid from the Musicians Guild, they get a little con going...until they arrive in Bad Blintz. A wonderful novel, I couldn't put it down and read it through in one sitting...too bad I started it at 3 AM. You wouldn't know you were on the discworld, as it focuses on a small town, except for a special cameo I had been hoping for...SQUEAK! A great stand-alone novel, there's just enough there for fans to recognize casual comments or background. I highly recommend this.
