Editorial Reviews:
For more than a decade, young Danina Petroskova has known no life but that of the ballet and her mentor Madame Markova. When a deathly illness steals her from the stage, the young dancer is inconsolable, and, desperate to speed her recovery, Madame Markova agrees to hand Danina over to the talented Dr. Nikolai Obrajensky for treatment. Convalescing with the Romanovs at the Tsarskoe Selo palace, Danina learns to live in and love the world beyond the ballet. And while grateful for Nikolai's companionship, she is startled by the intense emotions growing inside her for the married doctor. Drawn to Danina, Nikolai cannot ignore the passion between them either, and the strength of their love quickly overpowers their resistance. Soon Madame Markova and Nikolai's wife remind them of their previous obligations, and as the Revolution hovers on the horizon, the two must make a decision that will change their lives forever.

As if a romance set in the twilight years of Czarist Russia doesn't have enough intrinsic pathos, Danielle Steel takes great care to give her hero and heroine the bittersweet combination of incomparable virtue and external duties. When the young prima ballerina and the married doctor meet, they are drawn to the corresponding sense of integrity and duty in each other. However, when love and duty conflict, the struggle is never easy.

Maestro Steel knows where the heartstrings are, and she plays them with her reliable talents. While students of history may cringe at the simplified approach to the historical period, readers just looking for a good time have found it. With the tough-but-loving mother figure, the ill-but- lovable Prince Alexander, the borrowed ball gowns and the emotional grand jeté, this book has everything a TV movie needs except a small, cuddly pet. Put your feet up, set aside your spoilsport logic and enjoy this novel for what it is: a classic romance. --Nancy R.E. O'Brien

Customer Reviews:
A story of love that never dies
Granny Dan is a story from a wonderful era when life was harsher but seemed so much simpler. It is the story of a legacy left by a Grandmother to a granddaughter who thought she knew Granny Dan but never really did. It's the story of passion which lasted a lifetime but was never really understood. In short it is the story of Nikolai and Danina and how their love never died. Pure, unadulterated pleasure, a sheer joy to read.
Spell Binding
Granny Dan, is a book written with nostalga in mind, but done well. It starts with a box, belonging to a older relative, and then develops along their life, and what she lived to see and who she was. Danielle Steel wrote with the intention, of looking at the older generation, and just trying to imagine what they have been though, and how they got to where they are today. This book reveals the truth about a lost gran, and how she came to be the person she was, and the tales she could of told. It winds a deep spell around the audience, as she dances her dance of life with her toe shoes....This book is an aquired taste, as the open ending doesn't appeal to many people, but for me it leaves a space for thought, and reason...try...make up your own mind.
Perplexed!
This is a book for those who seek to get to know the featured characters well. I felt that although the book explores ballet and its risks and hardship in great detail, the romance leaves a lot to be desired! What there is of the passion is enthralling, as always, but failure to develop the plot gives the reader none of the satisfaction gained from a "happy ending", you're left dangling in mid air, wishing either there was more to read to tie up loose ends or that you could change plot to include the features we all want to hear!
An infantile attempt at a romantic novel
This book should be put on the shelves for children, it is very immature writing and leaves the reader with a wish to hurry through so as not to have to read any more. Definitely for kids and Grannies.
A lightweight read with a wafer thin plot.
This is a strangely frustrating book. A simple, uncomplicated romance that never progresses, never challenges and never impresses. Set in the context of a fascinating era of Russian history it fails use the backdrop to any effect. I kept hoping that the plot would develop and I read to the end. I was left wishing that I hadn't bothered. If you like a book that leaves a trail long after the last page is read then don't even start this one.
