Customer Reviews:
The Best Book I own
This is it. The book you need. I have been teaching music for 15 years and own all the books you can think of. This book is the best for searching for musical words and more and as other customers have said, the composer time line and the other pages of info at the back are really useful. One customer said that they discovered something not in the book. ( False/Cross relations ). No one book contains every single thing. It would be too big if it did so there will always be some things not in every book you buy. but this book has more that every other book and i add whatever i discover not to be included to it. ( Locrian ) for example even though there is much about the other modes, this " new " dictionary follows the line stated by the abrsm that locrian is not in use and therefore it does not make it into the book. a process of illimination i guess ? so i addded Locrian and one or two others myself. This Definitely is my best music dictionary and i highly recomend it to every student and teacher alike.
Excellent ! It has served me well up to G6 with the ABRSM.
This book is a little gem. I bought it when i was still at high school, for my music class (about 5-6yrs ago). Going through my music theory and piano lessons it has been an excellent book - small, and you can easily carry it around with you.
Only now, as I'm getting more advanced into music, am I looking around for a big, thick, hardback. This book covers more than the basics - there is lots of diagrams and pictures - which i love. Getting more advanced now i'll give an example of where it fails to deliver eg. False relations - this is an english terminology, the American word for it (they always have to be different) is cross relations - it is not in the book.
I came out of an exam really worried as i'd never come across it before - I got even more worried when i couldn't find it in this dictionary. I went to my teacher's house and i left her house kicking myself as i knew what False relations were.
The bottom line is this is an excellent book i highly recommend it but if you're already at a high level of music (about G5) then buy another book.
This is an excellent resource for Music students
This music dictionary is clear and contains many good explanations of musical terms. As a music teacher I recommend this to my students - especially GCSE and above. The illustrations and msuical examples are a great bonus, and the pupils find these helpful. Of particular use is the timeline at the back with composer dates.
